Puerto Rico to require tax returns from candidates

Posted:

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- Anyone seeking to run for mayor, legislator or governor in Puerto Rico is now required to submit 10 years' worth of tax returns to the elections commission.

Gov. Luis Fortuno said Tuesday that he signed the new law because he feels public officials should be held to a higher standard and more scrutiny.

Fortuno said he would submit his tax returns late Tuesday.

He said people running for other public offices will have to submit five years' worth of tax returns.

Fortuno also said those running for governor this year have 30 days to submit their returns.

The announcement was made as the U.S. Caribbean territory prepares for this year's general elections.
