Obama applauds Iowa Democrats for their help

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is telling Iowa Democrats that "because of" them the Iraq war ended, a major health care law was passed and the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy on gays has ended.

Obama was speaking Tuesday night in a live video teleconference to Democratic activists during Iowa's leadoff presidential caucuses. Republicans are taking their first step in nominating a challenger to Obama.

Obama told the Iowa activists that they "have made the difference" in helping his administration meet promises he made when he first ran for president in 2008.

Iowa Democrats launched Obama's presidential ambitions in 2008, and the state expected to be competitive in the fall election.
