Plover intersection to get safety changes

PLOVER (WAOW)--An intersection in Portage County is getting a safety makeover. It is located at Maple Drive and Highway 54 in Plover.

The Plover Police Department has seen 33 crashes at that intersection in the past ten years, two of them were deadly, according to authorities.

Those numbers have officials looking into changes on those roads.

Despite the road being fairly wide open, experts say the speed limit may be a factor in the number of crashes.

"That roadway is right at a transition area where the speed ramps up to 55 MPH," said Village of Plover Administrator Dan Mahoney. "Motorists know that and they begin speeding up before the intersection. So that makes it more difficult for people turning left to accurately gauge speed of oncoming traffic," he said.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation is looking into possibilities of a roundabout or traffic signals.

The DOT says the project is set for 2014 and could cost as much as $1.2 million. The Village of Plover says it would like to see that date moved up.
