Governor creates workplace training council

Gov. Scott Walker is creating a new council to help better prepare students for college and careers.

Walker's announcement Monday that he was creating the council comes after he cut $71 million in funding from technical colleges last year as a budget-savings move.

That cut and a $250 million reduction to the University of Wisconsin System were roundly criticized by Democrats and others as harmful to worker training efforts.

Walker says the new council will consist of representatives from small business, the workforce, state school Superintendent Tony Evers, cabinet secretaries and top officials from public and private universities and technical colleges.

Walker also voiced his support for legislative proposals designed to connect job seekers with employers.
