Governor Walker unveils "Wisconsin Working" plan

SCHOFIELD (WAOW)-- Governor Scott Walker was in Schofield Monday to announce a new plan to improve the skills of Wisconsin's workforce.

The Governor created a College and Workforce Readiness Council to help better prepare students for college and careers. Walker announced the "Wisconsin Working" plan at Jarp Enterprises.

The plan is designed to improve worker training and connect people in need of work with open positions. He said the plan also outlines ways to help veterans find work.

"This is a prime example of where we can put those resources to work," said Walker in regard to the plan and the need to get people back to work after hundreds of jobs were lost in north central Wisconsin recently.

Walker said the new council will consist of state officials, members of the workforce and educational leaders from across the state.

This announcement comes after Walker cut $71 million dollars in funding from technical colleges last year as a budget-savings move. That cut and a $250 million dollar reduction in funding the UW system were roundly criticized by Democrats and others as harmful to worker training efforts.
