Marshfield K9 Unit trains to keep community safe

MARSHFIELD (WAOW)--The Marshfield Police Department was training their K9 unit Tuesday. Officials say the unit trains their K9s for drug and patrol searches twice a month.

They say six dogs from departments around the area participate in the bi-monthly training. Officials say the K9s are useful in many ways.

"It's a deterrent for people who are combative with us," said Marshfield Police Department K9 Handler Scott Schlei. "Having a dog there, it totally stops things," he said.

Marshfield Police Department K9 officials say the dogs will go out on drug searches 120-200 times a year. They say the dogs give them another tool to keep the community safe.
