Merrill school board member tries to save elementary school
MERRILL (WAOW) -- A Merrill School Board member has proposed a new plan to keep an elementary school open.
Last week the board voted to close Pine River Elementary School in order to save money. But board member Loretta Baughan instead wants to close Prairie River Middle School. Under her plan, sixth graders would move to different elementary schools, and grades 7-12 would go to Merrill High School. Baughan says the move would keep Pine River open and save the district money.
But some parents argued the move would put younger students together with older students.
The board discussed the proposal Wednesday evening. They say they'll consider it for the future. But as for now, the current plan to close Pine River will go forward.
