Abandoned dog leads humane society staff to surprising discovery

ANTIGO (WAOW)-- An American bulldog ended up at the Langlade County Humane Society, but this was no ordinary rescue. That's because this dog lead rescuers to a surprising find.

The hero of our story has no name and no known history. She was found last Saturday in an abandoned home in Antigo.

"A very good dog," said human society patron Sheila Knapkavage. And that's all they knew about her...until they made a discovery.

"She could just tell by how she looked that the puppies were born recent." A dog, and apparently a new mother. But where were her puppies?

Staff at the Langlade County Humane Society wanted to do everything possible to find out.

So they packed up the pup and took her back to where she was found to see if she could lead them to her litter. As time passed, concern grew. "If they're out there, they probably didn't survive the night," said Knapkavage.

The mother had been separated from her puppies for more than 24 hours. That is, until she led them around a corner outside a home...to a heartwarming discovery.

Ten puppies, all crying out for mom. "I was yelling they're over here, they're over here. It was awesome."

The entire litter safe and sound--thanks to mom. She's doing fine too, and in the process, earned a name.

"We thought we'd name her star. we figured she's a star for showing us where her babies were," said Knapkavage.

A fitting name for this American Bulldog.

The puppies will be available for adoption in a few weeks. If you are interested in taking one home, or would like to donate to the Langlade County Humane Society to help take care of the dogs, click here: http://www.langladecountyhumanesociety.org/
