Japan's PM reshuffles Cabinet to win tax support

Posted:

TOKYO (AP) -- Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda replaced five Cabinet ministers on Friday in a bid to win more cooperation from the opposition to raise the sales tax.

Two of the removed ministers had been censured by the opposition after they made comments that were deemed inappropriate.

Noda named Katsuya Okada, a former foreign minister, as deputy prime minister to lead tax and social security reform.

Noda, who took office in September, has promised to submit a bill in the next parliamentary session to raise the 5 percent sales tax to 10 percent by 2015 to rein in Japan's bulging deficit.
