Lawrence Szews, 81, Elderon, died peacefully on Thursday, January 12, 2012 at his home under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services, Wausau.
He was born on November 22, 1930 in the township of Elderon, Marathon County, the son of the late Max and Regina (Bender) Szews. On August 20, 1955, Lawrence was united in marriage to Gertrude Ostrowski at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Polonia. She survives.
Lawrence was a United States Army Veteran, stationed in German during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the Elderon VFW Post No 8068. After discharge he worked at the Former Rundall's in Milwaukee. Larewnce was a retired dairy farmer, having owned and operated the homestead farm from 1958-1996. After his retirement he grew and sold christmas trees. He enjoyed farming, hunting, polka music and ice fishing. During the summer he enjoyed throwing horse shoes with any willing opponent. He also enjoyed attending the annual Szews family reunion at Elderon Park and taking a vacation trip to Sturgeon Bay to pick cherries and gathering the family for corn roasts on the farm. But most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren.
Survivors include Gertrude, his wife of 56 years, four daughters; Terry Szews, Weston, Kathy (Brian) Rosinski, Franklin, Joanne (Steve) Pringnitz, Clintonville & Renee (Luke) Korbisch, Birnamwood, nine grandchildren; Kimberly Szews, Nicole Rosinski, Justin Rosinski, Spencer Pringnitz, Megan Pringnitz, Brandon Pringnitz, Rachel Korbisch, Courtney Korbisch and Kayla Korbisch, one great granddaughter; Kalia, five brothers and sisters; Rupert (Jean) Szews, Hatley, Irene (Bernie) Schaefer, Colgate, Joyce (Don) Zenz, New Berlin, Jim (Henrietta) Szews, Hatley and Ron (Janice) Szews, Plymouth, MN, sister-in-law; Mary Jane Szews and brother-in-law; Leo Schwab. In addition to his parents, Lawrence was preceded in death by a granddaughter; Abby Korbisch, one sister; Lorraine Schwab and one brother; Ernest Szews.
The funeral service will be held at 11am, Monday, January 16, 2012 at Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg with military rites conducted by the Elderon VFW Post No 8068. Interment will be in Evergreen Rest Cemetery, Elderon. Visitation will be held on Monday from 9am until the time of service at the funeral home.
