Colby HS raises awareness for dangers of drunk driving

Posted:

CLARK COUNTY (WAOW)--A Colby High School student dressed as the Grim Reaper showed up for an event put on by a club called Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD).

Once a year, the Reaper goes into classrooms and removes one students at a time. That student comes back into the classroom "dead", representing a victim of drunken driving.

The victim does not speak when they return, representing them as just a memory to their friends and family.

"If we can help one person today, whether it's a 5th grader or an 8th grader, or one of the SADD kids from making a bad decision, then it's a great feeling," said Monica Tesmer, the Colby HS SADD Advisor.

Students were removed from class every 33 minutes. Tesmer says this represents the figure for someone dying from drunken driving that often.
