Thousands in Guinea-Bissau mourn late president

BISSAU, Guinea-Bissau (AP) -- Thousands of residents have been gathering in the capital to pay their final respects to Guinea-Bissau's late president.

The funeral for Guinea-Bissau's late President Malam Bacai Sanha started Sunday at the National Assembly hall and concluded at the Amura military base.

Sanha, who was elected president about two years ago after the previous leader was assassinated, had died in Paris on Jan. 9 after a lengthy hospitalization. His body was flown back to the this tiny, coup-prone nation on Saturday.

Resident Tcherno Culabio said that Guinea-Bissau lost a great leader. Another resident Alfa Djalo said that Sanha was a man of peace.

Since independence from Portugal in 1974, Guinea-Bissau has been wracked by coups and has become one of the main transit points for drug traffickers ferrying cocaine to Europe.
