UK police clear Parliament Square protesters

LONDON (AP) -- British police say they are removing tents and protesters from London's Parliament Square.

Protesters, initially led by the late peace campaigner Brian Haw, have been staked out opposite the houses of Parliament for about 10 years.

Campaigners who had set up a "Democracy Village" on the square in 2010 were evicted in July 2011 on a High Court order. That led some protesters to pitch their tents on the sidewalk next to the lawn.

Scotland Yard said Monday officers arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m. to remove "all tents and sleeping equipment" from the square. It said no arrests had been made.

The officers were assisted by team's from the local Westminster council in loading equipment into trucks.
