Stevens Point crossing guards keep their pay

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) --  Stevens Point crossing guards will not be taking a pay cut after all.  This, after a vote by the city council Monday night.

A few weeks ago, crossing guards had voluntarily agreed to take a pay cut, losing three dollars per hour.  But, now after a majority vote by the council, they won't have to.

The Stevens Point police chief says the city will cover the costs with the money left over from past budgets.

"We hold them with very high regard and I was very happy to see that the council had reconsidered their initial decision to cut the program and then to add funding and then finally to add even more funding," Police Chief Kevin Ruder said.

The city employs nine crossing guards. Ruder said each one makes roughly 18 dollars per hour.
