(CNN)--The F-D-A is ordering the American Red Cross to pay up to the tune of $9.6 million dollars.
It comes after federal inspectors reported finding hundreds of blood safety violations at nearly half of the Red Cross's collection centers across the country.
The violations included ineffective donor screening and failure to add new donors with infected blood to the national list of deferred donors.
The F-D-A says the violations, while serious, did not compromise the nation's blood supply.
In a statement, the Red Cross says it's already taken steps to address the issues brought up by the F-D-A.
