No alcohol safe during pregnancy

(CNN)--It's no secret that drinking alcohol while you're pregnant can lead to birth defects.

But a new study is looking at when that damage tends to happen.

Researchers looked at the drinking patterns of nearly a thousand pregnant women.

They found that the second half of the first trimester tended to be the time most babies began developing signs of alcohol exposure, such as low weight and some head and facial characteristics.

Researchers say babies showing these signs were born to both heavy and light drinkers.

They say the findings show no amount of alcohol is safe during pregnancy... from conception until birth.
