New fire truck can help save lives, protect firefighters

WAUSAU (WAOW)-- Firefighters in Wausau are saying out with the old and in with the new-- a new fire truck that is. They told Newsline 9 this newest creation with a Wisconsin connection is a big upgrade.

"It's Christmas morning here," said Battalion Chief Doug Beula. With all its new bells and whistles, it's hard to miss the Wausau Fire Department's new fire truck.

"It is the most state-of-the-art aerial that you can purchase in the market today," said Pierce Manufacturing Sales Representative Kevin Pomasl. Pierce custom built the truck over the past six months with input from local firefighters.

The vehicle is state-of-the-art, and firefighters said, very safe.

"It rides better, it steers better, it has better braking capability," said Beula. The truck also includes airbags, a feature lacking in the departments other trucks.

"The basic job they do every day is so dangerous to begin with, so anything we can do to help them do it in a safer manner is a huge, huge step forward," said Beula.

The trucks platform also got an upgrade. Firefighters said it can reach the top of Wausau's tallest buildings and has the capacity to pump twice as much water. Beula said the new truck will better meet the needs of the community.

Back in November, we took you inside Pierce Manufacturing's headquarters in Appleton. Back then, Wausau's truck was in pieces. Now, it's a finished work of art.

"Overall they're getting a better truck with state-of-the-art safety capacity and it's much safer to operate and drive and use at a fire," said Pomasl.

A truck built to save lives and better protect the people who use it.
