Haiti court convicts 7 police in prison riot trial
LES CAYES, Haiti (AP) -- A Haitian judge has convicted seven police officers on a range of charges for their role in a prison riot in which at least 10 prisoners were shot to death.
Judge Ezekiel Vaval says six others police officers were innocent.
The 13 police officers were accused of murder, attempted murder and other crimes after they allegedly opened fire on prisoners during a prison riot one week after the January 2010 earthquake in the southern town of Les Cayes. The verdicts were announced Thursday.
The sentences ranged from two years to 13 years of hard labor.
The case has been watched closely in Haiti and overseas. It is considered a rare test of the judicial system in the impoverished country.
