Stevens Point man and dog share special bond

WAUSAU (WAOW)--A Stevens Point man and his dog share a special bond. Brad Tetting says,"In a sense I rescued him and also he rescued me."

Brad Tetting served in Iraq and found the transition back to civilian life a challenge. During his time of service, he says he noticed amputees who worked with service animals recovered better physically and emotionally. So, he tried to adopt a dog of his own.

His search took him to the Portage County Humane Society.. and a dog named Whiskey. The Husky/Lab mix is an older dog, with a crooked front leg. Shelter workers say when Brad walked up to Whiskey's pen, the dog started to bark and they became fast friends.   Brad says,"I saw him and I didn't need to see any other dogs.. just him."

Word spread through the shelter that Brad wanted to adopt the dog. Shelter workers say then the donations started coming in. Sherry Tucker says, "People said I want to help with the adoption.. I'll pay all of it."  Those donations helped pay for Whiskey's donation and now a fund is set up to help other service members or veterans looking to adopt an animal.

As for Brad and Whiskey (who has since been renamed Mr. Whiskers) it's been one month since the adoption. Mr. Whiskers is a certified Service Dog, allowing to go just about anywhere with Brad.  They are a team that works well together,a man looking to start over and a dog in need of a second chance.
