Mom, son accused of election crimes in 2010 race

GROSSE POINTE PARK, Mich. (AP) -- Authorities have charged a mother and son with trying to inflate the list of candidates for a 2010 Senate race in the Detroit area.

The attorney general's office says Forrest Smith and Rita Smith conspired to add a man to the Democratic primary to try to dilute the votes and help their candidate. Rita Smith is accused of notarizing the phony candidate's affidavit.

Ironically, the candidate favored by the Smiths didn't end up running in the 2010 Democratic primary.

The Smiths live in Grosse Pointe Park. The Associated Press left a phone message for them Thursday seeking comment.

They're expected to appear next week in Detroit's 36th District Court.
