Apple's new educational tools

(CNN) -

Apple wants students to throw away all their textbooks and pick up an iPad.

At an event at New York's Guggenheim Museum Thursday, the company unveiled three new products it believes will remake the educational landscape.

A new app called "I-Books Author" lets anyone create an interactive, digital textbook.

Another new app, called "I-Tunes U," lets teachers plan their curriculum and easily share it with students.

The company also announced a new online textbook store called "I-Books 2."

All these products run on Apple's wildly-popular iPad.

The company says that benefits students because it lowers the price of textbooks, since they're all digital, and saves them from carrying around 3 or 4 heavy textbooks.

Critics say if the new products catch on, it could give Apple too much control over educational content.
