Wis. Senate passes bill on student restraint

Posted:

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Wisconsin state Senate has passed a bill that would limit how public school employees physically restrain or seclude its students.

Lawmakers unanimously approved the measure Tuesday. The bill specifies when seclusion or physical restraint is allowable, including when a student presents a clear and immediate danger. Seclusion can last only as long as necessary.

The bill says only people who have been properly trained should be involved in using such tactics.

The proposals had received little opposition. No one spoke against it at a hearing earlier this month. Supporters include disability rights advocates and school administrators.
