Stevens Point resident gives $60k to restore McDill Pond

STEVENS POINT (WAOW) -- A Stevens Point community member has made a donation to help restore McDill Pond.

According to Mayor Andrew Halverson, a man came forward with a $60,000 gift for the City of Stevens Point. Halverson says the money will eventually go to the Village of Whiting in exchange for transferring ownership of the McDill Dam to the Lake District.

Halverson says once that transfer is complete, the Lake District will own the dam while the City of Stevens Point will maintain it.

The Lake District was also recently awarded a $319,000 matching grant from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources to help repair the dam.

McDill Pond in the Village of Whiting was drained in July to inspect a leak in the dam.

Repairs on the dam should begin by spring, Halverson says. If all goes well, McDill Pond should be filled by June or July.
