Tiny Houlton will change with 4-lane bridge

HOULTON, Wis. (AP) -- Growth in a tiny community along the St. Croix (KROY) River in western Wisconsin is expected to surge when a new $690 million, freeway-style bridge is complete.

The project got the backing of the U.S. Senate this week, which exempted it from the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act. The House must also act. The community of Houlton, with its 400 residents, is expected to become an economic winner when the bridge is built, likely by 2018.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press says (http://bit.ly/x5LEfd ) says the four-lane bridge will affect land values, bolster the local economy and change life in a community that lacks even one stop sign on its main street
