WIAA meets to discuss future location of state basketball tournaments

STEVENS POINT (WAOW)--WIAA members met in Stevens Point to discuss several issues on Wednesday. One of the bigger ones--moving the state basketball tournament out of the capitol.

Representatives from both Madison and the Green Bay area made their cases for hosting the tournament in 2013 and beyond.

"Both communities did their best to really make clear their interest and commitment to these events," said WIAA Executive Director Dave Anderson.

WIAA officials say there are a number of factors in the decision.

Anderson said, "a very key part of the deliberation remains. Is the venue, is the facility available when we need it?"

Both sides were allowed to present points for their case. Officials say Madison reps spoke of tradition and value of the Kohl Center.

"There's millions of dollars that are a part of this friendship. In today's economy especially no one wants to be casual about seeing that leave a community," Anderson said.

On the other side, members of the WIAA say reps from the Green Bay Area made compelling offers for hosting the tournament at the Resch Center.

"With guarantees from parking to concessions to hotel accommodations to help the WIAA preserve this tournament as a fan friendly, family welcoming event," Anderson said.

Which ever city plays host, WIAA officials say they hope to decide soon, so they don't distract from the tournaments later this year.

Officials say picking the right venue is important, and that they will continue to consider all options and factors in the coming weeks.
