PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- Haiti's president is backing away from a possible pardon for former dictator Jean-Claude Duvalier. President Michel Martelly says he will let justice run its course in the case of the man known as "Baby Doc."
Martelly says he was misunderstood in a Thursday interview with The Associated Press when asked about Duvalier and responded that he wants to "create peace and pardon people."
On Friday he sought to clarify his remarks.
Martelly tells Irish radio station Newstalk FM he didn't mean to suggest he would pardon the former dicator who is awaiting word on whether he will be tried on charges of corruption and human rights violations. Martelly says he was trying to say only that he wants to end Haiti's long internal conflict.
