UPDATE: Rep. Seidel announces run for State Senate

WAUSAU (WAOW) --  Democratic State Representative Donna Seidel has made her decision.

In a press conference Tuesday at UW-Marathon County, Rep. Seidel announced her bid for State Senate in the 29th district.

That seat is currently held by Republican State Senator Pam Galloway.

"People are upset, they are frustrated and they want change," Seidel said in an interview after the press conference. "I believe I can make a very important contribution."

Seidel told supporters she will make jobs, education, and health care the top issues of her campaign.

"Our priorities need to be people, hard working families and students over the interest of big businesses," Rep. Seidel said.

But, Republicans are criticizing Seidel. Saying she created government spending and massive deficits.  Galloway was unavailable for an interview, citing a family emergency.  But, her campaign released a statement saying, "the last time Senator Galloway's opponent was in charge of our state budget, Wisconsin was left with a $3.6 billion deficit." And that, "it was Donna Seidel's 2009 budget that increased taxes by billions of dollars."

Leader from the Republican Party of Marathon County say Galloway's record speaks for itself.

"Wisconsin has to be more fiscally responsible because our federal government is totally out of control. So, Wisconsin is standing on its own trying to save more money and create jobs," Paul Rondeau, Republican Party Treasurer said.

But Seidel says the people want change.  And she is ready for what's ahead.

"I am energized, I am excited and I think this is a great opportunity," Seidel said.

Recall officials have until March 19 to review the petitions. From there, they will know if they have enough signatures to force a recall election.

Rep. Donna Seidel (D-Wausau) announced her intention to run for State Senate.

Seidel made it official Tuesday morning during a press conference at the University of Wisconsin - Marathon County.

Petitioners turned in signatures forcing a recall against Sen. Pam Galloway (R-Wausau) earlier this month.

Former Marathon County Democratic Chair Jeff Johnson announced his intention to run as well. If both Seidel and Johnson collect nomination signatures, there will be a Democratic primary before the recall election.
