Wis. teen gets probation in baby-abandonment case

APPLETON, Wis. (AP) -- An Appleton teen convicted of abandoning her newborn baby outside a church last May has been sentenced to three years of probation. The child survived.

Seventeen-year-old Nadia Zahirudin pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of disorderly conduct, obstructing police and being party to the crime of child neglect.

A Post-Crescent of Appleton report (http://post.cr/y2YVmQ ) says if she complies with the terms of her probation, a felony charge of child abandonment will be dismissed.

Defense attorney Brandt Swardenski said his client was "a very scared girl" who made a bad decision, but one made with her daughter's well-being in mind.

The baby's 18-year-old father will return to court next month for a plea hearing.

A passer-by found the baby wrapped in a blanket near the back door of a church May 9.
