Discussion continues on Nepco Lake land swap

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW)--Discussion continues in Wisconsin Rapids as the county decides to pursue an offer to trade public land with a private company. Those talks include several acres of land and a boat ramp at Nepco lake.

County leaders say the owners of Great Northern Timber Company proposed a trade to give 17 acres of land and a boat launch to the county. In exchange, the county would give 14 acres, with 10 along the lake front.

But the offer was pulled by the Timber Company owners last week.

A representative for the owners said, "The ultimate goal is to make the lake more useable and the reason to do this was not necessarily that they were going to pick up a lot of dollars in their pocket. It was to try to find a way to make it economically reasonable to undergo the cost to do a lot of rehabilitation on the lake," he said.

"People aren't real keen on the idea of getting rid of any of the park land. The other thing is that they really want access to the west side of the lake," Chad Schooley from Wood County Parks and Forestry said.

Thursday, people who live in the area offered their suggestions to the county moving forward. Some suggested the county build its own boat launch. Others said the lake is small enough, about a mile across, that they could easily access the water from the east side.

County officials say they will take all these suggestions into account.
