Lund resigns from Antigo School District

ANTIGO (WAOW)-- An Antigo elementary school principal and football coach involved in a major drug investigation has resigned. John Lund submitted his letter of resignation to the district on Monday and on Thursday night, the school board accepted it.

"Mr. Lund has resigned from employment with the district effective immediately," said the school district's attorney Dean Dietrich.

In his resignation letter, Lund states, "My career has been a varied and rewarding one. I greatly enjoyed working with you and everyone in the district. I will miss all of you, especially the students."

Lund was placed on paid administrative leave in December. Last month, he was charged with eight felony drug counts, including selling and delivering marijuana.

At the end of last month, Lund was placed in unpaid leave.

Harmony Williams' two children attend West elementary where Lund was principal. She said the charges came as a shock. "And I was really irritated, especially as it came out that there was more than one teacher involved," she said.

She also said explaining the investigation to her children has been tough.

"I've had to answer questions to my kids about why their teacher is no longer their teacher. My daughter has cried about it," she said.

Four other district employees have been placed on paid administrative leave because of their connection to the investigation. No action was taken against them at the board meeting Thursday night.

Board members declined to comment, but did release a statement saying in part, "the investigation regarding the conduct of the other district employees on leave continues."

"We anticipate that further action will be considered over the course of the next five to perhaps ten days. We hope that it will move along quickly," said Dietrich. He also said there are no other employees under investigation by the school district at this time.

School officials said Cindy Fischer will continue as interim principal at both West and Pleasant View Elementary School until the end of the year. They also said a search for Lund's permanent replacement will begin shortly.
