Pa. gas drilling fee bill debate ends without vote

Posted:

HARRISBURG, PA (AP) -- A bill to impose regulations and fees on Pennsylvania's burgeoning natural gas drilling industry will get at least another day of debate after talks ended when state lawmakers ran up against their nightly curfew.

The state House adjourned late Tuesday without a vote on the bill that had passed the Senate by a comfortable margin earlier in the day.

The measure would raise some $180 million in its first year for state and local governments, and bring new rules for companies tapping into Pennsylvania's Marcellus shale gas reserve.

Opponents call the bill a giveaway to energy companies and criticize the environmental provisions as too weak.
