DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- An opposition official in Senegal says police fired tear gas in a regional capital where the country's president was attempting to hold a campaign rally.
Alioune Tine, the coordinator of the M23 coalition, said by telephone that anti-government demonstrators had tried to take to the streets in Thies on Wednesday to protest against President Abdoulaye Wade's candidacy in this month's election.
Wade is seeking a third term, even though the constitution was amended after he took office to allow a maximum of two.
Thies is the hometown of Idrissa Seck, one of Wade's former ministers who is now running against him. The ruling party had insisted on holding a rally in Thies, despite fears of possible violence.
