Debate over Pine River Elementary continues

MERRILL (WAOW)-- Community members pleaded with the Merrill School Board Wednesday to keep Pine River Elementary School open.

In January, board members voted to close the rural elementary school at the end of this school year in order to save money. But some parents said the board should consider other options before transferring students to other schools.

"I think instead of closing schools we need to look at the bigger picture and take care of our community better than what we're doing now," said Pine River resident Linda Yingling. Her daughter attends the school.

But district officials said they are trying to do what's best for everyone and need to start planning for the school's closure, despite the fact that next year's budget is a tentative one.

"Our job as administration in particular is to proceed to work out the details. What will it look like when this change is made?"

Board member Loretta Baughan asked fellow board members why committees needed to be decided on Wednesday night when the budget won't be finalized until October. The board's president said they need to start planning now, in order to provide a smooth transition for students in the fall.

Meanwhile, Pine River supporters said they won't stop trying to save the school they love.
