UWSP Mens Hoops Team Falls on Buzzer Beater

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – A buzzer-beating three-pointer by UW-Stout forced extra time and a last-second three-pointer in overtime gave the Blue Devils a 67-64 victory over the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team Wednesday evening at Bennett Court.

An Austin Ryf (Winneconne, WI/Winneconne) jumper midway through the first half gave the Pointers a five-point lead before the Blue Devils went on a 7-0 run to take a 20-18 lead with 5:03 left in the first half.

UWSP answered back with its own 7-0 run for a 25-20 lead and both teams battled back-and-forth through the final five minutes as the Pointers took a 30-27 lead into halftime.

UWS claimed the lead early in the second half, 32-30, before senior Dan Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph/Minnesota-Duluth) connected on a three-pointer for a one-point UWSP lead. UWSP pushed its lead to nine at 57-48 with 3:49 remaining on a Jordan Brezinski (Muskego, WI/Muskego) layup, its largest of the game.

The Blue Devils then chipped away at the Pointers' lead, going on a 7-0 run over the next 2:33 to bring the game back to a two-point advantage in favor of UWSP.

With four seconds remaining, Tyler Tillema (Randolph, WI/Randolph) converted one of two free throws to give the Pointers a three-point lead. The Blue Devils' Alex Oman took the inbounds pass and connected on a half-court shot as time expired, sending the game into overtime.

In overtime, the lead changed three times before both teams were knotted at 64-64 with 1:55 remaining.

Still tied, Oman's layup was blocked by D. Tillema, but Hank Kujak rebounded the deflection and launched a game-winning three with 1.3 seconds left and the Pointers' last-second attempt came up short, resulting in a 67-64 win for the Blue Devils.

D. Tillema led the Pointers with 18 points while T. Tillema (15), Brezinski (13) and Jordan Giordana (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) (12) each scored in double figures. Brezinski also tallied a game-high nine rebounds and T.Tillema had a team-high four assists.

Stout's Alex Oman had a game-high 20 points including eight rebounds while Jarvis Ragland added 11 points.

UW-Stevens Point (19-5, 12-3 WIAC) returns to action on Saturday as it travels to UW-Eau Claire to take on the Blugolds in the final regular-season game. Game time is set for 5 p.m. or 30 minutes after the women's game.
