EMT in Marathon County under investigation after car crash

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW)--An emergency worker in Marathon County is under investigation. Authorities say he may have helped cover up a car crash, that left one person seriously injured.

50-year-old Meldon Maguire is a volunteer EMT for three area fire departments. He's also a supervisor for the Town of Emmet. Maguire was arrested earlier this month. Now, he could face charges for failing to report a crash until 19 hours after it happened.

Maguire has not been charged in this case. Officials at the District Attorney's office say they are reviewing possible charges.

The crash happened just outside of a rental property owned by Maguire. The suspected driver is his tenant and friend.

Photos of the scene in Emmet were taken by deputies, 19 hours after the crash. According to investigators, Maguire's friend called him after crashing into a tree. That crash happened around 1:30 the morning of January 28.

The report says authorities weren't called until 8:30 P.M. that night, even though the passenger had severe internal injuries.

Authorities say the truck was also moved from the crash scene into the driver's garage.

The report says the driver, 24-year-old Jacob Pitt, told investigators he didn't report the crash right away, because he was never involved in one before, and didn't know what to do.

He now faces five charges, including resisting or obstructing an officer. He will be in court March 1st.

Maguire told investigators he is not usually called to scenes that way. After follow-up investigations from Pitt and Maguire didn't match, the report says they were arrested.

Attempts to reach Maguire and Pitt were unsuccessful. Newsline 9 also attempted to contact all three departments where Maguire volunteered. The Mosinee fire chief did not return our call and the Stratford fire chief had no comment.

The Edgar fire chief said he has asked Maguire not to respond to any emergency calls. He says that is in place until the matter is cleared up.

The passenger that was injured in the crash says he's feeling better, but does not wish to comment further. Again Maguire has not been charged at this time.
