WIAA decision possible next month

MADISON (WKOW) -- The executive director of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Association said the issue of the future venue for state high school basketball tournaments will not be addressed until after this year's tournaments next month.

During a Madison interview, WIAA executive director Dave Anderson refused to respond to questions over whether there's been discussion between WIAA and UW-Madison officials since Anderson's recommendation to move the tournaments from Madison to Green Bay was accepted by the WIAA board.

Scheduling conflicts between the high school tournaments and UW sports at the Kohl Center led WIAA officials to consider moving the tournaments to Green Bay's Resch Center.

Last week, UW Athletic department officials said they planned to continue talks with their WIAA counterparts in hopes of reaching compromise on conflicts and preserving the long-standing Madison tournament tradition.

Anderson refused comment on the possibility for compromise and a return to Madison.

This year's boys state basketball tournament takes place March 15-17. The girls tournament is staged March  22-24.

Anderson said WIAA officials would meet after the tournament to discuss what he called "substantive issues" as it relates to the future home of the tournaments.
