MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Republican candidate for U.S. Senate Mark Neumann says he is the most conservative candidate in the race and because of that he can win in the primary against former Gov. Tommy Thompson and state Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald.
Neumann spoke Thursday at a candidate forum at the annual Wisconsin Newspaper Association/Associated Press meeting.
The only Democrat in the race is U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin.
Neumann served four years in Congress in the 1990s.
Neumann says he is the right candidate for the Senate this year because he is focused on balancing the federal budget. He dodged a question on gays in the military, saying he isn't focused on discussing social issues in this campaign.
