First-place General Excellence winners were The Badger Herald at University of Wisconsin-Madison and The Advance-Titan at UW-Oshkosh.

The William E. Branen Scholarships honoring excellence in high school journalism went to Sevastopol High School's The Pioneer Chips, Wauwatosa East High School's Cardinal News and Stoughton High School's The Norse Star.

Branen, former publisher of the Burlington Standard Press and a past president of the Wisconsin Newspaper Association, died in 1988.
