CARACAS (AP) -- Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is on his way to Cuba to have a tumor removed from the same region of the pelvis where he had cancer surgery last year.
Chavez held the hand of his daughter as he bade goodbye to supporters and military officers Friday afternoon at the Miraflores presidential palace.
He then got into a black SUV and rode through Caracas headed for the capital's international airport. Chavez stood in the vehicle with his head and shoulders sticking out of the sun roof, and waved to crowds lining the streets.
Chavez will be treated by the same Cuban doctors who extracted a baseball-size tumor last summer.
He has said the new growth, about an inch (two centimeters) in diameter, is likely malignant.
