WAUSAU (WAOW) -- An area college has decided to suspend some of its sports programs.
Northcentral Technical College started the intercollegiate sport program two years ago. School leaders said dozens of students signed up to play women's volleyball and co-ed soccer. The sports were funded by a percentage of student fees. That money will now be used for intramurals, recreation and leadership programs.
"After every year, you assess what you're doing and you make sure it still works within the framework you're trying to do with students," said NTC director of student development Shawn Sullivan. "I think after the second year of athletics, we noticed a couple of things. We were struggling with participation rates."
Students can still participate in a number of different activities on campus -- like intramural basketball, flag football and frisbee golf. School officials said the sports could still be brought back at a later date if there is enough student interest in the intercollegiate program.
