Madison Matters: Bid to erase treasurer stalled

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- State Treasurer Kurt Schuller made the ultimate campaign promise -- elect him and he'd try to fire himself.

True to his word, Schuller has drafted a constitutional amendment abolishing the low-profile treasurer and secretary of state offices. An Assembly committee passed the amendment back in October, but it's gone nowhere. The legislative session ends in mid-March and majority Republicans have been wrapped up in bigger issues.

Now Schuller is making one more attempt to resuscitate his amendment. He pressed lawmakers this week to move on the amendment, saying taxpayers could be subjected to another election for the offices in 2014.

Republican leaders in both the Assembly and Senate have been mum on the amendment.
