Wis man accused in deaths likely won't be at trial

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Madison man accused of strangling his girlfriend's two young sons apparently won't be present during his upcoming trial.

David Hoem is representing himself in the deaths of 3-year-old Kemaury McArthur and 4-year-old Kevin McArthur on July 5th.

At a Tuesday hearing, the 28-year-old said he would no longer participate in the case after Dane County Circuit Judge William Hanrahan rejected his request to pursue an insanity defense.

On Friday, Hanrahan asked Hoem to tell him what he meant but Hoem didn't say a word.

Hoem also had to be coaxed from his cell and wheeled into court in restraints, so Hanrahan concluded he doesn't want to be present at trial, which starts March 5th.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the judge will allow him to change his mind.
