Are Santorum's comments on higher ed out of step?

ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -- When Republican presidential hopeful Rick Santorum calls President Barack Obama "a snob" for urging more Americans to attend college, he may be out of step with the public's overall view of higher education.

Many Americans are suspicious of the culture of academia, and most are angry about rising costs. But polls show that they overwhelmingly -- and increasingly -- agree that higher education is important and that they aspire to it for themselves and their children.

The director of the Institute of Public Opinion at Muhlenberg College in Allentown, Pa., Chris Borick, says some of Santorum's greatest levels of support have come from voters without a college education

Borick says that Santorum's more recent comments on education appear to be part of an effort to energize blue-collar Republicans.
