Low snow totals this winter

MARATHON COUNTY (WAOW)--So far, Newsline 9 Meteorologists say this winter has seen warmer temps and lower snowfalls than usual. In the Wausau area, the snowfall total is 14.7 inches below average.

That has meant less time, digging out of the snow,  for homeowners. But, it also takes a toll on winter recreation activities. The snowmobile trails have yet to open in Marathon County. Marathon County Snowmobile Coordinator, Jon Daniels, says the trails are unlikely to open unless we get a significant snow. If the trails don't open, Daniels says, "This would only be the second year in the past 21 years, that the trails have not opened."

With snow in the forecast this week, snowmobilers hope it will bring them a return to the trails.

Area hardware stores that sell shovels and snow blowers say they expect a heavy snowfall will bring end-of-the-season shoppers in looking for deals. Stores have remaining stock in the store aisles.

You will also find they are starting to turn their attention to the upcoming spring yard duties, like gardening, mowing and planting. Stores have lawnmowers and other gardening tools out on display, as many people start to think about spring.
