Arrested PR official accuses gov't of power abuse

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) -- A major opposition official and candidate for mayor of Puerto Rico's capital charges that the government's handling of a domestic violence probe at his home was excessive and politically motivated.

Hector Ferrer was arrested Thursday for alleged domestic violence at his home in a San Juan suburb.

Police say there is evidence that the minority leader in the Puerto Rico House of Representatives damaged the house and made crude statements to his wife in the presence of his 5-year-old son.

In his first public comments, Ferrer asserted Monday that Puerto Rico's Department of the Family abused its power during the probe.

Ferrer's wife has since lifted a restraining order imposed against him.
