Colombia's chief prosecutor unseated by court

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) -- A high court in Colombia has unseated the country's chief prosecutor on the grounds that she was improperly elected. The post is second in power only to Colombia's president.

Prosecutor Viviane Morales was elected by the Supreme Court in December 2010 from among a set of candidates proposed by President Juan Manuel Santos. A different court ruled Tuesday that she didn't get the required number of votes.

Morales has been under intense scrutiny since her marriage last year to a former congressman who served as an adviser to far-right paramilitaries and also had contacts with extradited drug lords.

Morales, however, has prosecuted several former close associates of former right-wing President Alvaro Uribe on corruption and criminal conspiracy charges.
