Senegal heading to runoff in presidential race

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) -- Provisional results indicate that Senegal's presidential race will head to a runoff after none of the 14 candidates won a majority of votes in the first round.

President Abdoulaye Wade, whose decision to seek a third term has infuriated many Senegalese, received 942,546 votes, or 34.82 percent.

He will face off against his former protege, ex-Prime Minister Macky Sall. The results issued late Wednesday by a Senegalese court showed Sall received 719,369 votes, or 26.57 percent.

The results are a humiliating defeat for the 85-year-old Wade, who experts said needed to win on the first round when the opposition vote was split. His chances of winning the runoff are considered slim.
