Senate hopeful Neumann unveils federal budget plan

Republican U.S. Senate hopeful Mark Neumann has unveiled a plan he says would balance the federal budget in five years.

Among other things, Neumann's plan calls for repealing President Barack Obama's health-care law and enacting spending cuts.

Neumann, a former congressman, says his strategy calls for less government and lower taxes, which he says "leaves more money in your pocket."

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports Neumann says his plan would help strengthen Social Security and Medicare. Once the budget is balanced, he says the government can start replenishing the Social Security Trust Fund.

Neumann is running in a crowded Republican field for Senate that includes former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson, Assembly Speaker Jeff Fitzgerald and Rhinelander physical therapist Kip Smith. Rep. Tammy Baldwin is running as a Democrat.
