Wisconsin hockey falls to Minnesota

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- Nate Schmidt scored in the third period as Minnesota came from behind to beat Wisconsin 2-1 Saturday and win the McNaughton Cup championship outright for the first time since 2007.

The cup goes to the Western Collegiate Hockey Association regular season champion. The Golden Gophers (24-12-1, 20-8-0) have the top seed for the upcoming WCHA playoffs.

Schmidt's scored at 7:40 of the third period. Erik Haula had tied the game for the Gophers with a short-handed goal minutes earlier.

Tyler Barnes' power-play goal gave the Badgers (16-16-2, 11-15-2) a 1-0 lead in the second period.

Kent Patterson made 17 saves for Minnesota and Joel Rumpel had 31 stops for Wisconsin.
