Wis. Senate approves wolf hunt bill

The state Senate has approved a bill that would create a wolf hunt in Wisconsin.

The bill would establish a hunting and trapping season that would run from mid-October through the end of February. The Department of Natural Resources would be allowed to determine how many licenses to issue. If the number of applicants exceed the number of licenses, the DNR would award half of the licenses randomly and the other half to applicants with the most preference points.

Wisconsin wolves came off the federal endangered species list last year. The state is now free to manage the wolves as they see fit.

The Senate voted to pass the bill 24-9 with no debate Tuesday. The Assembly was expected to take up the bill later Tuesday or early Wednesday.
